Vienna, Austria

Posted on June 14, 2018August 8, 2020

Today we explored Vienna! We started early, grabbing a quick breakfast at Anker bakery at the Central Station, where we also picked up a two-day travel pass, which gave us unlimited travel on the metro, which is absolutely amazing. We learnt to use it very quickly and we were able to get around Vienna very efficiently.

First stop, Karlsplatz station, where we got out and walked past the opera house and towards Burggarten Park.

The first of many statues we came across was of Goethe. The next one was Mozart.

We then walked around the Neue Berg onto Heldenplatz and the stunning Hofburg Palace.

We spent some time here enjoying the scenery and taking lots of photos, especially with  Kaiser Franz 1, before going into the Sisi Palace – a stunning collection of china and cutlery from the imperial era, and a walk through some of the rooms of the palace.

We then walked across the compound to the Imperial Treasury.

Sated, we headed into the old town, toward Graben. We took photos of the pest column, in memory of the victims of the great plague of 1679.

From there we walked across to the stunning baroque Catholic Church of St Peters.

A short walk away is the equally stunning Gothic Cathedral of St Stephens.

We stopped at the nearby cafe Weinwurm for a bite to eat and a drink before heading a few blocks away in the Greek District of Fleischmarkt to see the beautiful Greek Orthodox Church.

We then headed back to the hotel to change and head out to Schonbrunn Palace, the stunning summer residence of the Hapsburgs. We have seen many palaces on this trip – this one is perhaps the grandest of them all. The gardens are stunning.

The gardens included a beautiful maze that we spent some time within. The whole area is amazing!

In was getting towards dinner time so we looked around for a nice restaurant and stumbled upon a wonderful little Greek restaurant called Odysseus. We then walked back to the palace for a concert held in the main building. It was wonderful.

It was the perfect end to a perfect day in Vienna.
