St. Gallen, Switzerland; Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Posted on June 25, 2018August 8, 2020

For the last day of our trip we decided to see the east of Switzerland, the old monastery town of St. Gallen and the principality of Liechtenstein.

St. Gallen is only about an hour by train from Zurich. We got there mid-morning, but the weather had changed and was very cold.  We walked toward the old town looking for the cathedral and the famous abbey library.

The streets of the old town in St. Gallen are quite pretty heading to the monastery yard.

From the outside the cathedral is quite bland, but inside it is amazing. Full rococo style that is both beautiful and over the top.

round the corner from the church is the famous Abbey library of Saint Gall, founded by St. Othmar in around 700CE. It is breathtaking.

We walked around the streets of St. Gallen for a little while, although it was very quite, then after a quick snack at the station, we jumped on a train down to Sargans. From there we walked around the block and caught the bus across the border into the principality of Liechtenstein, and into the capital, Vaduz.
Vaduz is now a very modern city, overlooked by the old medieval castle still inhabited by the crown prince.

The art on the street is beautiful, but all in all the city is quite boring if you are looking for classical Europe.

After an hour or so, we caught the bus back to Sargans, then the train back to Zurich. It was our last afternoon, so we took some more photos on Muhlesteg on the Limat River, did some shopping in the old town, then sat down for a traditional Swiss pub dinner at Grabli Bar. It was an enjoyable end to a wonderful trip.
