Bratislava, Slovakia

Posted on June 12, 2018August 8, 2020

We caught the train from Prague to Vienna, and arrived just after lunch. By the time we checked in and unpacked our luggage at our Vienna apartment, it was close to 3pm, so rather than start in Vienna, we decided on a little side trip to Bratislava, Slovakia, about an hour away by train.

When we arrived at Bratislava’s Petrzalka train station, we caught a taxi across the river so as not to waste time. Unfortunately it cost us as the taxi driver ripped us off. Never mind, we set off to explore the city.

We walked along Panska then into the old town. First stop, St. Martin’s cathedral.

the old town is quite small and compact, so walking was easy. We made our way to the main square and Roland’s fountain. There are quirky statues everywhere – it really is quite different to the other major cities, like Prague, Vienna and Budapest.

Unfortunately it started to rain as we headed up toward Michael’s gate on the old medieval wall.

We walked out past the old moat and back into the city, before stopping at a pub, Venturska, for a Slovakian cold meats platter and drinks.
By now the weather had let up, so we walked back out through the gate. Under the gate there is “Kilometer Zero”, a plaque pointing to all the major cities in the world.

We walked around outside the old town then back in before settling on a restaurant in the main square, Roland Restaurant Cafe, for some interesting, Slovakian, dinner.

After dinner, we made our way back to the station for the shop trip back to Vienna.
