Today was our first day on the Eurail pass. After validating our tickets and grabbing coffees and a danish, we caught the train over the Oresund bridge to Malmo in Sweden.
Malmo was surprising. The old town is absolutely beautiful, with many gorgeous old buildings and squares. After walking through the old town we headed over to the castle. You could almost feel the history in the buildings.
We then got back on the train and travelled to Lund, once the head of the church in northern Europe. Lund also happens to be a university town. I had heard how nice it was so we stopped there for a look. Nothing prepared us for what we found; Lund is absolutely gogeous. The cathedral takes your breath away. Dating from 1050CE, it is amazing.
The university is also unbelievable. Harvard and Princeton are beautiful. This is stunning. I particularly wanted to see the library building. Wow! Breathtaking.
It was now time to head back to Denmark. We took the train to Helsingborg and then caught the ferry to Helsingor. We walked through the old town to Kronborg castled, the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The castle is so well preserved it is amazing. They even ran impromptu scenes from the play in the middle of the courtyard.
After an enjoyable hour at Kronborg, we got back on the train to our final destination, Hillerod and the amazing Fredericksborg Castle. We had seen some beautiful things today, but this is something special. The castle is amazing, and the grounds are simply stunning.
After enjoying so many beautiful places, we headed back to Copenhagen and dinner at an Italian restaurant. Rania and I had a seafood linguine. It was delicious. Chrissa had grilled salmon.
Sated, we headed back to our hotel for a well-earned rest and recovery.
What a wonderful day. Denmark is very surprising.
