Roskilde and Copenhagen, Denmark

Posted on June 4, 2018August 8, 2020
Day 2 has been absolutely exhaustting. We started by walking to breakfast at a cafe Rania had found, called Mad and Kaffe. But it was not open until 8:30am so we kept walking to Carlsberg Brewery and the famous elephant gate. There is so much construction going on with scaffolding everywhere, but we still got to see the famous landmark.
We then headed back to the cafe. The food was amazing.
Finished and full, we went to the train station for the short trip to Roskilde. This town was, during Viking times, the capital of Denmark, and we went to see the Viking museum and the Cathedral.
The museum is quite fascinating. They have the remains of five original Viking ships, and they use the facility to learn how they were built as well as to teach and understand the history. We even tried on some costumes.
We then walked up the hill to Roskilde Cathedral. This place is amazing. It hods the remains of dozens of Danish kings and queens.
The town of Roskilde is quite beautiful so we took our time heading back to the station and back to Copenhagen. We disembarked at the last stop which is near the little mermaid and walked the short distance for a close-up look.
We then walked along the waterfront to Amalienborg Palace, where the royal family live. The whole area is just beautiful.
We did the tour of the palace, and learned about the almost unbroken 1000 year old line of Christian and Frederick kings of Denmark.
We then walked across to the beautiful marble church.
At this point, Rania was desperate for her iconic Copenhagen Instagram post, so we caught the metro to  Christianshaven, went to Munchies to buy the famous waffle cones, then hopped back on the metro to Nyhavn for our photo opportunity.
At this point we really needed a drink and a rest. We got back on the metro to Torvehallerne, an open street food market, where we sat down at Delikateser for some traditional Danish Smorebrod, or open sandwich.
We then walked to the Round Tower, and up the internal ramp and stairs for a great view of Copenhagen.
Exhausted, we caught the train back to the hotel for nap before dinner. We headed out at 8:30pm for dinner at Apropos, for a pub dinner. I had a fancy burger, Rania had a pasta with beef in a capsicum sauce (really nice) and Chrissa had a fish and chips. We were exhausted, and headed back to our hotel for a well-earned sleep.
