We got up this morning and after a nice breakfast of bread and danish we headed to the airport for the short flight to Berlin. After checking in to the hotel, we headed out to explore the city. We used the Metro system which turned out to be quite easy to use. First stop was the Gendarmenmarkt.
Then it was off to the Brandenburg gate.
From there we walked over to the Bundestag. That is an impressive building. On the way we came across the memorial to the murdered gypsies. This gave us or first look at the many memorials in Berlin.
We then went to the stunning memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. What a beautiful and sobering site.
We then walked around to the modern culture forum, to see the Gemaldegalerie, a museum that houses many old master paintings, including Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Eyck, Caravaggio and Titian. It is a beautiful museum with a wonderful collection of art.
Exhausted from walking, we caught the Metro back to the hotel to change, and then caught the Metro out to a beer garden Rania had discovered, called Pratergarten.
It is an open space between buildings that had been lit up and used as a beer garden. It was very popular with people arriving all the time. We found a seat and ordered beers and schnitzels. The food was served with potato salad. It was very nice. And the price was quite reasonable.
After dinner we headed to Alexanderplatz and the TV Tower for a spectacular view of Berlin.
