Today was an easier day after two long days. We caught the bus mid-morning to Sorrento. It took about an hour to get there, and only cost two euro each. We weren’t sure what to expect there, maybe a slightly bigger version of Positano. But Sorrento is a big metropolis. We got there at about 11am and the place was buzzing. There were people everywhere.
We walked a few blocks from the bus station to the main square, then found a small laneway to the side that was your typical bazaar. This is the real Italy. Locals, tourists and everything in between. People everywhere, music playing from a busker off in the distance (usually the piano accordion). It was a day for all the senses.
We wandered through these streets just enjoying the vibe, as we headed toward the beach. The beach is where it really gets surprising. Sorrento essentially suits on a cliff way above the sea. You need an elevator just to get there. It is quite beautiful, and very surprising.
The water was Crystal clear and very inviting. We walked around a little more before heading to the main square for lunch; at Fauno Bar. I had a Moretti beer and shared a pizza with Jana. Chrissa had a salad and Pe a chicken schnitzel. It was a nice relaxing lunch. Chrissa and Jana also had a cocktail (a Spritz, of course).
After lunch, about 2pm, we got up to explore some more. The change could not have been more stark. The main square and the streets were empty. It must have been siesta time. Shops were closed. It was quite bizarre. We walked around to the duomo for a look then back to the laneways to find a gelato. We found a good one!
Satisfied, we headed back to the bus stop and caught the 3pm bus back to Positano. We changed and caught the shuttle into town for dinner.
We ate at chez black, which is right on the beach front, and recommended by Irene. Jana and I had a steak. Chrissa had a veal. Pe had a pesto pasta. We shared a wine, before wandering around town some more, then caught a bus back to our hotel.
All in all, it was a very relaxing day.
