Jongfraujoch, Switzerland

Posted on July 15, 2017August 8, 2020

Today we headed high into the Swiss Alps. We caught the train to Interlaken, then the next leg up to Leave, then Kleine Sheidegg and finally up to Jungfraujoch. The Swiss landscape was just beautiful.

At 3500m high, the landscape is quite stunning. It is the highest railway station in Europe, and includes a tour that starts at the sphinx, a 150m high elevator ride to a lookout. On one side the air was calm. But on the other it was absolutely freezing, with ice on the ground and the wind howling.

We then went outside on the calmer side where they had toboggans and chairlifts. Some people were also doing cross country skiing.

We then walked around to the ice palace, a long cave made of ice with sculptures and other interesting panels.

Finally, we came out into the high point where they have placed the Swiss flag. It was freezing, windy, icy. And it was incredible to go out there.

When we finished, and had a small lunch. We decided to go back out the the Swiss flag. It was a little less windy this time and there were less people so we got some really good photos.

When we finished, we caught the train down, this time via Grindelwald. At Interlaken we walked along the river to Lake Brienz. Such a beautiful and serene spot.

Finally we headed back to Bern, and wanting to try something different headed to the town of Bienne for dinner. Unfortunately, other than the lake, the town was not as pretty as the pictures – but the dinner was very nice. It was an Italian restaurant near the railway, Pizzeria Seeland. The pizza was the best we have had the whole holidays.

Finished, we got back to Bern at about 9.30 pm.
