Today we set off early to explore Prague. We followed a similar route to yesterday as we walked through the old town. At this time of the morning there was hardly anyone on the streets, so we had the chance to have a really good look at the sites.
We walked to Charles Bridge and from there we headed up the hill to Prague Castle.
After going through security at the castle gate, we walked around the palace and past St. Vitus church. This is a beautiful Gothic church.
We walked around the castle and enjoyed the atmosphere as slowly the crowds started building up. We then headed down the other side to Wallenstein Garden, a beautiful, serene spot bellow the castle hill.
We then headed across to Mala Strana on the other side of the Charles Bridge to find the Lennon Wall, a stretch of wall dedicated to John Lennon.
We then headed back across Charles Bridge. We climbed to the top of one of the towers for a fabulous view of Prague.
We headed back toward Celetna and Rania and Chrissa had the famous Prague TrdelnÃk, a rolled pastry filled with chocolate.
At this point we wanted a new adventure, so we caught a taxi to Vysehrad, a castle precinct just ten minutes to the south.
With a famous old cemetery and a beautiful church. it is a very serene spot with fabulous views of Prague.
By this time we really needed a drink, so we caught an Uber to the dancing house, a famous building on the Vitava River, with a rooftop bar.
Refreshed, we still had a few hours free, so we caught an Uber back to the train station, then a short one hour train trip to Kutna Hora. The story goes that monks at Kutna Hora travelled to Jerusalem, to the site of Jesus’ death and carried back with them some dirt from that site. Legend grew in Europe and scores of people wanted to die at this spot. After many years, and some plagues, the bones of over 60,000 were to be found here. At this point a monk took it upon himself to organise the site. The result is an ossuary in the nearby town of Sedlec that is both fascinating and morbid.
Exhausted, we headed back to Prague, and Celetna, where we had dinner at Cerna Madona, a quite modern restaurant with a very friendly manager. All in all, this was a really good day exploring Prague and beyond.
